October 17 — Celebrate Whole-Hog Barbecue at The Pit

There's barbecue, and then there's the Eastern North Carolina tradition of cooking an entire hog. This Saturday, The Pit in downtown Raleigh is celebrating that tradition with a little history, some hands-on fun, and a whole lot of pork.

On Saturday, October 17, at 12 PM, The Pit will mark National Whole Hog Barbecue Day with pitmasters cooking a whole hog outside the restaurant. Visitors will also have the opportunity to make their own barbecue sauce to take home.

The celebration has roots stretching back decades. In 1980, a group of friends gathered for a pig pickin' along the Roanoke River in Halifax County. The tradition moved to Raleigh in 1983, and The Pit brought whole-hog barbecue to downtown Raleigh when it opened in 2007.

The restaurant officially established National Whole Hog Barbecue Day in 2022 to recognize the cooking techniques and traditions behind this distinctly North Carolina style of barbecue.

Raleigh Hidden Gem:

Amedeo’s is where Raleigh locals go for hearty Italian dishes served with a side of Wolfpack pride. The walls are a shrine to NC State history, and the lasagna tastes like it’s been perfected over decades—because it has. It’s not flashy, but it’s the kind of place that feels like home the minute you walk in.
