October 4 — The Secret Life of Roman Piggy Banks
Apparently, smashing your piggy bank to get the money out has some very ancient precedent.
On Sunday, October 4, from 2 PM to 3:30 PM, the North Carolina Museum of Art will host Breaking the Bank (Literally): The Secret Life of Roman Piggy Banks, a free lecture exploring how everyday Romans collected and stored their money.
Professor Robyn Le Blanc of UNC Greensboro will focus on small ceramic savings banks produced in central Italy during the second and third centuries CE. Decorated with images of gods, heroes, and athletes, the banks featured slots for depositing coins—but apparently no convenient way to retrieve them. Getting your savings back often meant breaking the container itself.
The talk will also explore what these objects may have been used for, including as offerings to household gods, New Year’s gifts, and children’s playthings.
Admission is free, but registration is required.
