After the film, stick around for a talkback with Dr. Mina Kaneko exploring the movie's themes, storytelling, and stunning animation. Curious how this new adaptation reimagines the beloved novel? July 17 — Christmas Comes Early (and Weird)
There's something inherently funny about celebrating Christmas in the middle of July, and that's exactly the point of Jolly Weird.
Held during Third Friday on July 17 from 6 PM to 9 PM, the event takes over CCB Plaza in downtown Durham with a deliberately unexpected mix of holiday cheer and summertime energy. The lineup includes snow, Santa, surfboards, artists, a DJ, and a few more surprises that don't neatly fit into either season.
It's the kind of event that doesn't spend much time worrying about whether any of it makes sense. Instead, it leans into the absurdity of putting winter and summer in the same place and seeing what happens.
If your ideal community event is a little stranger than the average festival, this one seems happy to embrace that. After all, you don't get many chances to see Santa hanging out with surfboards in July.

Amedeo’s is where Raleigh locals go for hearty Italian dishes served with a side of Wolfpack pride. The walls are a shrine to NC State history, and the lasagna tastes like it’s been perfected over decades—because it has. It’s not flashy, but it’s the kind of place that feels like home the minute you walk in.
